The Wayfinding project realized for the MIND Milano Innovation District recalls the idea of innovation that characterises the entire site and takes up the compositional and visual logic of the “MIND Flow” system, implementing the orientation system that develops as the backbone unifying the identity throughout the MIND site and which will welcome increasing numbers of new residents in the coming years, together with the workers and visitors who pass through the innovation district.
The wayfinding system has been conceived as flexible and modular to follow the continuous evolution of the site, with its construction areas and its different needs. In order to design a path with effective readability and orientation, the Studio identified two main categories of users – “occasional visitors” and “Minders”, i.e. people who visit the site daily for work and residential needs – and it has developed a targeted user journey for each of them. Starting from these two groups, the Studio then identified five spatial hierarchies within which users can orient themselves: from the district to the places of interest, from the buildings to the Tenants, up to the facilities of the individual areas. To meet the diverse needs of approach and detail that the two types of users require within the five levels, the project is characterised by a strong visual identity. The shades used vary from Yellow – the colour chosen to refer to the signage of the construction site and the “evolving” logic of the site – to Blue, in connection with the background of the sky, which is a constant reference in the open space of the site, up to the gradient between the two colours and a texture. The graphic design is therefore developed throughout the site through the use of a recognisable colour palette that is featured in macro-graphics, iconographies and physical elements to help people orient themselves immediately. Within the extensive wayfinding project several physical objects (Hoardings, Totems, Pins Building…) are designed in keeping with the chromatic and visual logic of the entire system, which are equally fundamental to the orientation of users and visitors. All the objects arranged along the path feature different characteristics, dimensions and information depending on the user and the level of detail.
